Winter RV Tips: Stay Warm and Travel Safely

Does your company need a winter RV for advertising and marketing promotions, a cross-country tour, or a movie production? Industry and company standards must be complied with when you travel for commercial purposes, and safety is always the primary consideration, especially during winter.

Motor Home Travel specializes in commercial RVs, whether you need a one-time recreational vehicle (RV) rental for a concert or a long-term rental. We have the right motorhome for your company, including executive rentals with electric fireplaces. Our RVs are maintained to the highest standards as we offer motorhome servicing in-house. In this article, we provide tips on staying warm and traveling safely in an RV during winter.

Essential Tips for Living in an RV During Winter

Camping in winter is enjoyable when you stay in an RV. At Motor Home Travel, we believe the journey is the destination and want our commercial clients to be comfortable when they live in an RV during cold weather. That is why we winterize the motorhomes when required. What is winterizing, and what can you do to be more comfortable?

An RV must be winterized when you travel to areas where temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. It includes emptying the water tanks and draining the water heater and water lines. Make your stay pleasant by protecting the water pipes, keeping the vehicle warm, and packing appropriate clothing such as warm socks, gloves, breathable underlayers, and thick mid-layers. Don’t forget your waterproof outer layer!

Protecting Pipes and Water Supply from Freezing in Your RV

Protecting the pipes and water supply from freezing might seem like an RV maintenance chore, but who wants to be without water? Being proactive guarantees, you have water for a nice hot shower at the end of a long day.

When you rent a commercial motor home for work purposes, ask the rental company what they require you to do to protect the pipes. They might have heat tape wrapped around the RV water hose, and you need to know how to manage the process. Keep your freshwater tank filled up at all times, and leave the bathroom and kitchen cabinets open so warm air reaches the pipes. Remember that moving water requires lower temperatures to freeze than sitting water.

Choosing the Right Heating for Winter RV Living

Choosing the right type of heating is essential when you are RVing in winter. The heating systems of many motor homes run on propane, while others have generators for electricity and solar panels. If your commercial RV rental uses propane, determine where it can be refilled either on your route or where you will be based. The executive rentals provided by Motor Home Travel include Mirada 35’ and Mirada Select 37’ motorhome units. Both have luxurious interiors, but only the Mirada Select model has an electric fireplace.

Did you know you should keep the shades closed when it’s snowing? The additional layer creates an air gap that minimizes the amount of cold air entering the coach. You might miss the view, but you will definitely be warmer!

Safety Tips for Traveling in Your RV During Winter

Being prepared and proactive driving are the best safety tips for traveling during winter. If you are driving in areas where snow and icy roads are expected, double-check that the RV has snow tires. Ask the rental company to show you where the snow shovel and ice scraper are stored. It takes longer to reach your destination during colder months, so add more time when planning your trip. How can you be a proactive driver?

- Leave three times the standard distance between your RV and other vehicles.
- Use low beams, as bright lights make it difficult to see the road through the snow.
- Icy road surfaces are dangerous. If your motorhome begins to slide, pump the brakes gently to regain control.
