An RV must be winterized when you travel to areas where temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. It includes emptying the water tanks and draining the water heater and water lines. Make your stay pleasant by protecting the water pipes, keeping the vehicle warm, and packing appropriate clothing such as warm socks, gloves, breathable underlayers, and thick mid-layers. Don’t forget your waterproof outer layer!

Protecting the pipes and water supply from freezing might seem like an RV maintenance chore, but who wants to be without water? Being proactive guarantees, you have water for a nice hot shower at the end of a long day.

They might have heat tape wrapped around the RV water hose, and you need to know how to manage the process. Keep your freshwater tank filled up at all times, and leave the bathroom and kitchen cabinets open so warm air reaches the pipes. Remember that moving water requires lower temperatures to freeze than sitting water.

Being prepared and proactive driving are the best safety tips for traveling during winter. If you are driving in areas where snow and icy roads are expected, double-check that the RV has snow tires. Ask the rental company to show you where the snow shovel and ice scraper are stored. It takes longer to reach your destination during colder months, so add more time when planning your trip. How can you be a proactive driver?

- Leave three times the standard distance between your RV and other vehicles. 
- Use low beams, as bright lights make it difficult to see the road through the snow.
- Icy road surfaces are dangerous. If your motorhome begins to slide, pump the brakes gently to regain control.
