What is an RV? 

The Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association (CRVA) defines motorized RVs as “an RV built on or as an integral part of a self-propelled motor vehicle chassis, combining transportation and living quarters in one complete unit.” These RVs are divided into the following classes:

- Class A Motorhome. The largest and often most luxurious class.
- Class B Motorhome. Often referred to as a camper van, it is a conventional van with a raised roof.
- Class C Motorhome. Sometimes referred to as a mini-motorhome.

At Motor Home Travel, we rent out only Class A and Class C RVs. Our Class C MHC30 30′ motorhome, for example, has lots of room for a family, as it sleeps six adults and three children. You can even take pets!         

What is a Trailer? 

What is a trailer according to the CRVA? It is “an RV designed to be towed by a motorized vehicle (car, van or pickup truck) and is of such size and weight as not to require a special highway movement permit. Towable RVs do not require permanent on-site hook-ups.” There are different types of RV trailers, including the travel trailer, the truck camper, and the folding camping trailer.

Key Differences Between an RV and Trailer  

What type of travel are you planning to do? Do you enjoy extended trips and want lots of space and amenities, or do you prefer to set up camp in one place and explore? There are several key differences when you compare trailer vs RV. What are some of them?

- You must stop to access the amenities offered by an RV travel trailer. With a motorized RV, you can walk to the kitchen and make lunch while someone else is driving.
- Motorized RVs prioritize comfort and luxury. They have electric ovens, microwaves, and refrigerators. The shower is inside the RV, while trailers generally have outside showers.  
- Motorized RVs cost more but hold their value better than travel trailers.

Which One Should You Choose? RV vs. Trailer Pros and Cons 

We have looked at motorhome vs trailer amenities and access convenience. Which one should you choose when your advantages and disadvantages are measured by driving experience, maintenance, and insurance costs?  RVs are less maneuverable than trailers, but both are equally difficult to find parking for in town or city areas. Trailers require less maintenance as they don’t have an engine, while RVs have more service periods. RVs require auto insurance, but you don’t need additional auto insurance for an RV travel trailer. However, you will need to insure the trailer once it’s detached from your vehicle to protect yourself from theft, damage, or liability.
